Edith M. Giammanco

Edith “Edie” Giammanco, age 89, of Fort Myers passed away peacefully at Hope Hospice on September 9th, 2014. Edith was born in Somerville, Massachusetts and was one of five children. She was predeceased by her husband, Giovanni “John” Giammanco in March of 2012. Edith left the Trackless Trolleys of Somerville after the wedding, and headed to one of the boroughs of New York...Brooklyn. Edith and her husband started their family in Brooklyn but decided after 5 years to move to the suburbs of New Jersey, to a little town called Carteret. There, she and her husband raised their daughter and son. Edith worked as a Seamstress, which was one of her passions, and also as a salesperson for a large retailer called Abraham & Strauss. About 40 years ago as empty nesters, Edith and John headed south to the warm sun and to another small town called Lehigh Acres. With jobs being scarce, Edith started working for Lehigh Hospital in town, as a Housekeeper. She soon realized that the area was growing rapidly and enrolled in getting her GED certificate. Edith was hired by Community Hospital of Ft Myers as a medical secretary and was part of the first class to be employed by the hospital. Now being retired for many years, Edith and her husband moved to Barkley Place in Ft Myers. This was a place she now called home. She loved all of the staff and they loved her, and quickly became friends with many of the residents. She was very thankful for all the support and care given to her while she was at the Barkley. Edith is survived by her children, Rosalie (Stephen) Markus of Ft Myers and Anthony (Sandra) Giammanco of Bradenton. Edith has four grandchildren: Ryan (Lindsay) Markus of Marietta, GA; Trisha (Carlos) Gil of Lehigh Acres; Nicholas Giammanco of Orlando and Vanessa Giammanco of Sea Bright, NJ. Edith also is a proud Great Grandmother (Nana) to six children: Bryson Markus, Bella Claire Markus, Carlos Gil, Gianna Gil, Tara Jessica Gil, and her youngest great grandchild Madison. Edith enjoyed collecting recipes and just loved to cook. Many times at the Italian American Club in NJ and in Lehigh Acres she would participate in the festivals and dinners. She like her husband enjoyed spending time with family and friends in Florida, this wonderful place they called “Paradise”. The beach at Wiggins Pass will never be the same, if it doesn’t have a pot of boiling water on the grill for pasta dinner on Sunday (who needs a dining room). This quiet, sweet, warm, caring, loving woman, was a wife, mother, grandmother(Nana), great grandmother(Nana) and a friend to all that ever met her. We thank God knowing we had her love all our lives, and we find comfort knowing that she is now resting in Heaven. Visitation will be from 2-4pm and 6-8pm on Monday Sept. 15, 2014 at the Anderson-Patterson Funeral Home, 2701 Lee Blvd, Lehigh Acres, Fl 33971 (239-368-7080). A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am on Tuesday, Sept. 16 , 2014 at St Raphael Catholic Church in Lehigh Acres, FL. Interment will follow in Lee Memorial Park.
