John Patrick Barkenquast

John Patrick Barkenquast of North Port, Florida passed away on Friday October 21, 2022, at the age of 67. Born April 26, 1955, in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Richard and Delores (Osemlak) Barkenquast, of Ida, Michigan. John married the love of his life, Anne Westover, on September 10, 1983, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Monroe, Michigan. They celebrated 39 years of marriage in September. During his life, John worked many jobs in construction and carpentry, including helping his son, Jonathan, a contractor, start his own small business, Everett Group. John spent his childhood growing up in Ida, Michigan and moved to North Port, Florida in the early 1980’s. John also loved spending time at his property in Sneedville, Tennessee with his wife, Anne. John was very involved in his communities in North Port and Sneedville. He was a long-time member of the City of North Port’s Planning and Zoning Board. John was a parishioner and usher at San Pedro Catholic Church. He was a coach with Miss North Port Fastpitch Softball, where he coached his daughter, Nikkole’s, softball team for several years. John also coached his son’s baseball team for North Port Little League. John started Undy Sunday at several churches in North Port, this program collected donations of socks and underwear, that were distributed to children in North Port that were in need. John arranged the donation of the City of North Port’s Christmas tree that is planted in the City Center Front Green. He was also a member of the North Port Early Bird Kiwanis and a pack leader for Cub Scout Troop 257. John spent his time in Sneedville, Tennessee volunteering for the Jubilee Project, where he would help with construction projects for residents in need of help. He was also a member of the Vardy Community Historical Society and the Vardy Volunteer Fire Department. When John wasn’t busy volunteering is his communities, he was spending time with his wife, Anne, his two children, and four grandchildren. He was an outdoorsman and could be found boating and fishing in Florida and hunting in Tennessee in the Fall. John also enjoyed four-wheeling and spending nights around a bonfire with his family. John is survived by his wife, Anne (Westover) Barkenquast; daughter, Nikkole (Sean) Kinsey; son, Jonathan (Christy) Barkenquast; grandchildren, Kyleigh Kinsey, Gaige Barkenquast, Jacob Kinsey, Reagan Barkenquast; brothers, Geary Barkenquast, Michael Barkenquast, Theodore Barkenquast, Gregory Barkenquast, Mark Barkenquast; sister, Michelle Barkenquast Stengel; several nieces and nephews; his dogs, Lobo and Sassi. John is predeceased by his parents Richard and Delores Barkenquast; brother, Rick Barkenquast; sister, Marian Barkenquast. A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2022, 10:00 a.m. at San Pedro Catholic Church. A celebration of John’s life will be held in Sneedville, TN on Saturday, April 22, 2023. Those who wish to remember John in a special way may make donations in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around you and whispered, “Come to me.” With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you pass away and although we love you dearly, we could not make you stay.
