Lena Katherine Aultman

Aultman, Lena Katherine (aka Aunt Kat), 82, a longtime resident of Sumrall, MS, died at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center Sarasota, FL of natural causes on Saturday, March 16, 2024. A celebration of life will be held at Sumrall United Methodist Church on June 1, 2024. ( Please see details below). Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Sonya and Tom Grubbs, Lithia, FL; and Lisa Kipley Aultman, Sarasota, FL; three grandchildren, Tyler Grubbs, Lithia, FL., Michael and Kathryn Kipley Sarasota, FL. Brothers include Earl Franklin Carter Jr (Sonny) of Sumrall, and James (Jimmy) Carter of Pascagoula. Nieces include Vicky Carter Brown, Amy Carter, Beth Carter Lantrip, and Marsha Carter Graham. Nephews are, Earl Franklin Carter III (Franky) Carter, Wynn Carter, Bentley Carter, Jamie Carter, along with many grandnieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Earl Franklin Carter, Sr. and Lena Mae Carter, both of Sumrall, her brother, Billy Carter of Memphis, TN and his son Billy Carter Jr. of Sumrall. Katherine was born in Brookhaven MS on July 24, 1941. She was the first girl in her family, with two older brothers and one younger one. She often proudly spoke that she helped her mother take care of her brothers, as much as that was possible. She spent most of her childhood growing up in Sumrall, MS and graduated from Sumrall HS. She had fond mémories of working at the cafe in town that her parents owned and ran. Her favorite sport was basketball. She of course loved to do the jitterbug as well and thought her brother Sonny was the best at it! After graduating high school, she eventually landed a job at South Central Bell as a telephone operator. She subsequently met and married Jimmy Dale Aultman, lived in Watervalley, and then eventually moved to Hattiesburg where she remained for a long time. They had two daughters, Sonya and Lisa. She also worked at Forrest General as an RPN. Further along in her career, she worked for people in their homes and sat with people at the hospital to take care of them. Later in life, she retuned to Sumrall to help take care of her elderly Mother and remained there until her recent death. She loved where she lived and was satisfied living there. She enjoyed running into prior friends or classmates in town and catching up. She also enjoyed frequenting the Dollar General, Ramey Grocery, and the Sumrall Pharmacy. Later in life, Katherine became a devoted follower of Christ. She attended a few different churches thought her life. She left a legacy of her prayer spirit and love of God with both of her daughters. She was considered by many, a “Prayer Warrior”. Even when she was unable to travel, she spent hours on the phone with her two closet friends, Susan and Jan, praying for many things. Katherine had a wonderful sense of humor, loved to tell stories and share with them her brothers, and of course she had a dose of the Carter “stubbournness” in her. She loved when her niece Vicky came by to visit her and she also enjoyed going out to eat with her local family members and friends. After her older brother, Billy moved to the Collins VA, she spent many days checking on him and visiting him. She was truly a “caretaker” and did a wonderful job loving and caring about all of her family. She was deeply loved and she will be deeply missed but we all know she is in a much better place in Heaven with our God. Katherine’s Celebration of Life will be held from 11am-2pm. The address is 145 Center Ave Sumrall, MS 39482. Please dress casually. A lite lunch will be served following the service.
