Sally A Poindexter

Sally Ann Smith Poindexter, 87, of Sarasota, Florida passed peacefully with much of her family by her side on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 in Sarasota. She was born July 7, 1933 in Canton, Missouri. She was the daughter of the late Howard Edwin Smith and Leta Fern Stutenberg. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jack Paul Poindexter, her brother James Edwin Smith and her aunt Jeanette Agnes Smith McCracken. She is survived by her three children: Jamie Diana Poindexter (Michele Jacques) of Waunakee, Wisconsin, Charles Arnold Poindexter, II of Sarasota, and Susan Gayle Poindexter Antonsen (Dennis Navarre) of Sarasota; her grandchildren, Christopher Daniel Poindexter and Christina Hurtado; and her great-granddaughter, Carrie Ann Poindexter. She is also survived by many other family members, including Ellen Bythrow and her children and grandchildren, Sally’s nieces, nephews and cousins, and Jack’s family in Burlington, Iowa. Sally’s many friends in Iowa, Wisconsin and Florida also mourn her loss. Jack and Sally met at the J. C. Penney’s store in Burlington, where he was a clerk and she was a customer. They were married August 12, 1951 in Burlington. They enjoyed being together with family and friends, most of all on the Mississippi River, scouting, camping, and meeting and keeping new friends wherever they lived. They moved from Kenosha, Wisconsin to Sarasota in 1979, where they owned Accent Decorators until their retirement. Jack passed on December 13, 2006 and, no doubt, he was there to welcome Sally. Sally found good in everyone and joy in everything. She will always be remembered for her sweetness, strength, caring, laughter, and participating fully in life. Despite being plagued with many health issues, she was always willing to join any gathering, visit any friend, share any experience. She was famous for her amazing ability to go just about anywhere on her trusty scooter and even won races scootering down hotel hallways with the kids. To celebrate Sally’s life, a flamingo-themed memorial gathering on a beach in Sarasota will be held later in the year when it is again safe for everyone to travel and to be in groups. Her ashes will be interned at the Sarasota National Cemetery along with Jack’s. Gendron Funeral Home in Sarasota is in charge of the arrangements.
