Nick Piegaro

Nick "Poppy" Piegaro, 83, of Fort Myers, Florida passed away September 28, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 4, 1929 in Newark, New Jersey, the son of Nicola and Concetta (Mancuso) Piegaro of Sicily. Nick was one of 14 brothers and sisters. Nick and Pat were longtime residents of Bayville, before moving to Fort Myers in 2000. He leaves to cherish his loving memory his loving wife of 45 years, Patricia Piegaro. He was the beloved father of Cynthia Caponegro, Colleen (Jeff) Coldon, and Tricia Friederichs,and was adored by his grandchildren Nicholas, Lauren, Gregory, Amanda, Ted, Tressa, Trent, Austin, Tabitha and Kim. Poppy was ecstatically expecting the arrival of his first great-granddaughter, Mia Mariana, due October 1st.He is survived by his brother Albert, sisters Luisa Rossi and Christina Esposito, as well as beloved nieces and nephews too numerous to count. Nick and Pat moved to Fort Myers year-round in 2005. He immediately became active in the community. "Poppa Nick" was an adored Docent for many years at the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. He particularly delighted in sharing his knowledge with the young children who visited. Nick was also a beloved usher at Blessed Pope John Paul XXIII church. He was passionately adamant that the young, as well as those with wheelchairs and walkers, were helped to the very front of the church where he saved them all a special spot! Poppy's joy in life (besides his cherished wife, Pat) was taking care of everyone! When he was not taking in garbage cans or newspapers for his neighbors, Poppy was volunteering with the SUN-N-FUN neighborhood watch. Nick proudly served in the United States Army during Korea. He was a loyal member of The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (Local 400) for 55 years. In addition, Nick was a life member of the Elks as well as the Knights of Columbus.
